The Vallarta Botanical Garden’s forest preserve of nearly 30 hectares allows for one such rare opportunity. Here you will safely explore habitat along the Los Horcones River where jaguars are documented and studied through camera trapping. No fences, no concrete moats… just you, your guide, and verified jaguar habitat.
Expeditions are available to the Brazilian Pantanal where tourists are almost guaranteed to see a wild jaguar, but those trips start at about $10,000 USD per person and require a large investment of time as well.
Our tour is designed to provide guests with high quality interpretive experiences of real jaguar habitat for just $2,000 MXN (about $99 USD) per person. While the chances of actually seeing one of these elusive nocturnal creatures during your tour is incredibly small, your opportunities to become intimately educated about their behaviors are extraordinary.
Guides who lead our jaguar tours have invested much of their time helping with the Vallarta Botanical Garden’s camera trap monitoring, a program in collaboration with Panthera, the world’s only organization devoted exclusively to the conservation of the world’s 40 wild cat species and their landscapes. These guides have worked with highly trained wildlife biologists, learning the habits of our region’s wild cats and what they need to survive in a changing environment. Your experience begins upon meeting up with an official VBG Jaguar Ambassador who will serve as your companion and interpretive guide of Mexico’s tremendous native flora and fauna.
Together you will wind your way along Vallarta’s stunning south shore and up the Horcones Canyon to the world-famous Vallarta Botanical Garden. From there the adventure begins in earnest once you enter the trails of the native forest preserve to explore and learn together. You may also choose to swim in the crystalline waters of the mountain river flowing through the property and then dine together in the Hacienda del Oro Restaurant with generous portions of authentic Mexican cuisine.
